The Speech of IGSE Principal


The principle of IGSE gave speech about two topics. First, he explained the importance of English, and it was so helpful for me. When I am asked why English is important, I couldn’t answer. Even if I am interested in and teach English, I’ve just said “English is important, because many people are using it. If English is not important, who use it?” It is a kind of stupid answer. However, through his speech, I could realize the importance of English once more and I could get some specific information of why it is important. Around 1 billion people are using English everyday and 1 or 1.5 billion people study English as a foreign language. Around one third of the countries all over the world speak English as an official language. In addition, 81 different languages such as French or Spanish are genetically related to English. As we can see, it is the most powerful language in the world. It has a great deal of influence on Korea as well. There are around 10,000 loan words such as taxi, coffee, or coca cola etc. Compared with 5000 about 5years ago, it is amazing. Now I can say why English is important. If somebody asks me about it, I will explain it with the specific information as he mentioned.
Next, he introduced studying abroad. It was also so helpful and beneficial. Even if I was interested in studying abroad before, I didn’t know what to do and I was worried about financial problem. I didn’t have any information about that before and even I didn’t try to find any information. I just thought that studying abroad is a kind of others’ business, not mine. During all his speech, I really concentrated on that. He gave lots of specific information which is so useful for studying abroad. He explained from how to prepare applications to how to get the doctor degree as soon as possible. It was so interesting. In the end of the speech, he mentioned his grade of the high school. It was shocking. His grade of the high school was very low, which can’t imagine him nowadays at all. However, mentioning his grade of the high school make me more confidant. Frankly speaking I am not sure what to do after graduation. It was good chance for me to think about studying abroad more seriously, though.
